Reporting behind the Void

Life's good. There's a little empty time up here, when I have no business bothering about anything.
Time to look back, I guess. Errr..

Interviewed
How about an interview to start with? Yes people, et got interviewed @ SpeakBindas.com.
What to tell, it was all a random invitation to a rather well formed interview. But the questions were keen enough, I'd say :)

Playing the Guest
Shravan is celebrating 100 posts at his blog. And for the 101th post, et has been invited. Thus happened the 1st ever guest post by moi. By the way, its mostly graphics :O

Still Burning
et On Fire was created(long back). There's a handful of comics out there, more colors, and more smiles. Take a look. I suddenly thought I'd be more regular there. Sudden thoughts, y'knw. :Fire

Simply Very Simple
A Very Simple Game was my first and only try at making a flash game. Amazingly, it turned out smashing good. It was well received and adored.
All that happened years ago. Then again, I was looking at the sky one chilly morning and simply decided to work up the 2nd version of the game. Well, I've been away from all that and related stuff. So I really have to work this up!
Meanwhile you guys can play the first release, comment upon it, and give me more suggestions on making the second one. :h

The Old Shelf
Little award business here..
At a time, I was completely immersed in blogging. It was like.. blogging, reading, commenting, adding widgets, walking through blogging forums, more blogging, and the awesome part - receiving and passing on awards.
Awards came in all sizes and shape - brotherhood award, sisterhood award, cutest blogger, fattest blogger and everything. No matter, they always did their part of encouragement.
And here let me collect a bit of some long-forgotten-to-accept awards. Okay, I'm not going into the rules and details. Let me just accept your love, fellas! :L

And may be some more which I lost somewhere between the other old stuff. Lets rewind and make some time, to check in all our happy times! :) :Rainbow

Requiem

Wait, hold your sad face! This is the happiest requiem ever sung!! :D

Earlier this year, I scribbled down The Dark Chapter : Screwed Up! . This one you're reading now is a sequel to the Dark Chapter.
The whole mess was around a ruined Lab exam of mine. Ruined because of erroneous instruments, careless heartless instructors, and my very personal hate for the underlined subject, Electronics!

Well, phew! That was over!

And as a matter of fact, there is.. the result yet to come.
And it came.
And..

I passed! No glory, no high altitude graphs. But i did pass!
This is important to me because, with the results of this 3rd semester, my every liability to study Electronics is over - in theory or practice. I'm free falling! Back to algorithms. :)

So, requiem, ye most hated subject!

No more a Folly

Last week got me totally busy on the final works of a dream-come-true venture. The efforts were worth it, and the dream did come true! :)

So what's this all about?

I think i mentioned here earlier; its a website on the history and tourism of Thalassery, my home place.

This has been a dream for a group of students. Now its a reality, of course. Once I too was a student of this school, and moreover I got a chance to handle the important work of the web designer in this project.

On to the site.. discover a whole new place on earth!

Remember, the address is http://thalasserytourism.com
More reasons to travel!! :D
Don't forget to leave your comments there!

And now.. awesome shots from the inauguration event, which was held at Overberry's Folly..

That's A and C, illuminating (shot by me)

Time to say the F word!

Free as in Fucking Freedom!!

Yeah, Fucking Free!

Guys, I'm so totally back! Done with semester exams.

Red Balloon

They sat on the concrete bench in the cemetery - a cemetery which was beside the sea. They looked to the far edges of light blue water.
Calm. Quiet. Cold. Still wet out of the last rain.

"What?" he turned his head in question.

"Whaat?!" replied the girl, suddenly interrupted from her silent focus on the sea.

His casual voice spoke "You're my best friend. But you know.. I could make you my love right now"
She tilted her head "You want to love me?"

"May be if I don't find another". His adorable grin.

"Really?". Her eyebrows up. A slight smile on her face.

"Not really. You see.. a balloon - may be a bright red, round one, filled with hydrogen..? Well, it's there in the air, tightened up with a white string, dancing lightly with the wind"

"Hmm.. " she listened.

"Now if you untie the string, let the hydrogen free.. first it flies around in a great thrill.. relaxing itself.. enjoying the flight.. In a short while, it comes down to the earth.. happy and contended, now to settle down in peace. And.. "

"And.. ?"

"And that is love. Even if you and me are filled to the brim with love for each other, we're still the tight-tied balloon, it being friendship. Once we accept to be in love, to be lovers, there unties the white string. There is a big difference"

She suddenly seemed thoughtful. "Yeah, it's true"

"That's why I'm keeping the string tied. There is pressure. There is a lot of something waiting to be released.. But you see, there is, again, the beauty of the balloon. Something we can't blow up with our mouth again. Something which cannot be made to stay floating in the air again, once it is untied.."

A small silence.

"What do we do?". She had a blank face but which was, at the same time, eager to know the answer.

"What if we cut the string and let the balloon fly up.. still tied, free of the possibility of being untied.."

"No!". That was an impulse. From her.

A big silence.
He smiled.
Her face still blank. A slight fear. A slight sense of losing something so un-losable.

He talked.. "I know. It's too good to be missed"

"Let's keep the balloon?". Her soft voice.

He smiled more brightly "Yeah, for now - let's keep the balloon!"

She smiled now.
Eye to eye.
The place still cold and wet.
A moment.

They again turned to the light blue sea.
The sky was misty. It was hard to separate it from the sea.

The red balloon wriggled, elegantly choreographed in the cold white air.

Ode to MJ

I made a new smiley to the collection today morning.

This one, is a tribute to MJ, who passed away this 25th of June.

..to Michael Joseph Jackson, the king of pop

Symbol: :mj Smiley: :mj

To the amazing skills he possessed.. the infinite energy he had within.. to that great person who stood up shining despite all the negative waves aiming at him.

I was never a die hard fan of MJ. There were only a few songs of him that I really admired. MJ was anyways, one of my heroes in the childhood. His death has now brought my admiration back, taking me deeper to his genius and uniqueness.. telling me to do something for his soul.

Black Out!

et loved the SAW series. :)

But his friends sued him for that. :(

et loved zombies :L

His friends never did. :~

No place for black(colour), no place for darkness, no place for the vampires and goths..

Then, et met Dark Gal :O

Oww.. and she loved everything mentioned above!
et and dg became gud, gud friends. :h

And then, they together created a daaark blog.
Painted in black, decorated with cob webs; built up in The Attic template.

et was born on 18th; dg on 5th.
Both were engineers.
18 - 5 = 13
The blog release was due on 13.

et slept off that day.

Again, 18 + 5 = 23
Nobody slept this time.

And thus was released The Dark Thinker by et and dg on the 23rd of June, in the dark midnight.

Bats flew in.. zombies crawled in.. wolves howled across the blogosphere.
The Dark Thinker 's here..!
Game on!

Analogue or Digital?

Going to college after a long vacation has totally distorted my brain's schedule. I almost fell on the desk sleeping by the second hour in the morning. And then I decided rest is more important. And thus I bunked all the afternoon hours. :D

At the restaurant, me and my buddy Jo had an argument on this.

Jo : "C'mon, you don't have to bunk now! All the teachers for the afternoon session is present."
et
: "No man! I'm dead sleepy and I can't even think of fitting in for 3 more hours in the class!"

After 10 minutes:

Jo : "Why, it's just the second day! Stay here."
et
: *silent*

After 5 more minutes:
Jo
: "Come back with me after lunch. All right?"

et
: *silent*
After 5 more minutes:
Jo
: "et.. I think I'll come with you."

et
: "Okay! Go back in a rush, take your bag, and come soon."

Now that's my friend Jo. He says he's not an analogous person. His decision curve goes like a digital wave. That is, sudden rise and fall of choices!

Like this:

His response time is very close to zero. I don't remember another person with such a spontaneously changing graph of mind.

Most persons have a graph like the one below:

The slope of the graph widely differs though. The above one comes more close to my way of thinking. Slow, and steady! :D

So what kind of person are you - analogue or digital? Do you know any perfectly digital persons like Jo? :)

Some persons are at extremes as well. Below is my friend Dipi's idea of bunking class.

Again, there can be highly dynamic graphs at particular situations. For example, my sis is put into the trial of choosing her higher studies.
Her possible thoughts on any given college will be approximately as shown below:

Now plot YOUR graph! :O

Waves, Sand n Sun

Today I've been to the seashore. It's the Muzhapilangad beach, which is a famous drive-in beach in the whole of Kerala. I had company - my mom, dad and my partner in crime.. sis! There were bikes and cars running in both directions. C'mon.. you can't even run free without fear on such a beautiful beach?! I preferred the sea! It was great walking in it. I just felt like diving down into the water, but left the fun for yet another occasion. It's been so long, I had even forgotten the feeling of the sand flowing away from under the feet when the waves strike in..

Silhouette on Sand : Me n Sis

The pictures taken with my mob cam are too gloomy. I don't want to ruin the beauty of the place with that... hence the greyscale! :)

Walking to the Sun : My sis

Lets think Mathematics!

Lets get geeky!
Did you know? - My mom is a maths teacher! Well, it doesn't mean anything like I'm a genius in maths :P . In this vacation the Kerala government is conducting funny courses to the teachers in all subjects to train them the new aspects of revised syllabus. The teachers are actually divided into groups, given assignments, some tricky questions and even homeworks!

Now today.. mom came up with two tricky questions.

Q #1
Take 4 numbers.
The sum of the first two numbers should be double the sum of the other two.
But the product of the first two should be half the product of the other two.

Actually we can find more than one set of such numbers.
Eg: 33 1, 11 6
33+1=34
11+6=17=2 x 34

33 x 1 = 33
11 x 6 = 66 =2 x 33

Got it?!

To solution..
Okey, so we burned our brains on various combinations of numbers, looking out for general properties and all. Not to mention we ended up with nothing more. :(

And then this thought struck me "Why don't I leave it to the computer?"
I wrote a very simple program in Java and amazingly the computer showed me a list of such numbers satisfying the above condition!

Below is the algorithm behind it..

for(a=1;a<=50;a++)
for(b=1;b<=100;b++)
for(p=1;p<=50;p++)
for(q=1;q<=2*p;q++)
if(a+b==2.0*(p+q) && a*b==p*q/2.0)
// Print a,b, c,d

The numbers that we needed(below 100) are..
1 33 , 6 11
1 45 , 18 5
2 60 , 15 16
2 66 , 12 22
2 90 , 36 10
3 91 , 21 26
3 95 , 30 19
3 99 , 33 18

When was I ever gonna find 'em without my computer? After all.. studying Java at school proves a little useful! :O

Q #2
Let us think (a + b) x a x b = 4545
The question is that "Are a and b natural numbers?"

To solution..
This time I left it to the computer with no other option!

The idea was to check all combinations of a and b where I ranged a from 1 to 50, and b from 1 to 200. But none of them gave 4545. So they must be some fractions!! :D

Now I made a program to check fractions in an attempt to find a and b. But I failed in this attempt. So far no such a and b exists :( .

Can you find them??

The algorithm used to find a and b is as follows..

for(a=.01;a<=50;a+=0.001)
for(b=1;b<=200;b+=0.001)
if((a+b)*a*b==4545)
//Print a,b

//Print "Over!"

I really think no such numbers exist!

Flame On!

Well here's the surprise of the month.
I'm now gonna disclose what I've been planning since the start of vacation. It's a new blog! And it's called et on Fire.

One fine day I got this feeling that I should start a blog to showcase et cartoons and other artworks, apart from personal blogging. In a brief sentence, this new blog is the result of that thought put into action. And that explains it! Okey, there's something more.. I plan to make some goodies like various graphics and e cards that you can use in your sites! Now that'll be more cool :) .

Don't ever think that I've been working weeks over the new blog. I did it in somewhat 3 days. The actual plan was to make some slight alterations to the Eternal Thoughtstemplate(currently used in blog). Even then I put the work aside and stayed idle. And then the day came, and the thought sparked in my head, and I made the Flaming thoughts template, now used by the new blog. I need all your feedback about the design! There's lot of experiment out there!

Why you should never use Internet Explorer??
It's because et on Fire blog looks like crap inside IE. When I tried it with all other browsers it looked just fine. And then in IE7, even the header wasn't displayed at all. I tried many tweaks over it. Then i dropped IE, at last. No matter how popular IE is, I can't delay the release of this blog. So stop using IE. And why should you use IE when you have cool browsers all around and the masterpiece browser Mozilla Firefox?? Go here and get inspired with Mozilla!

Again get inspired with et on Fire! :P

Teh surprise element..
Personal notes
The new blog was in the concept, soon it was put into process. All these times the hardest thing was to keep the surprise for now. There were many times when I was about to spill the secret like when choco started her new blog, during the twitter fight with kaddu and choco, or when I'm simply tweeting etc etc. Not to mention that I survived all these scenarios :) ! Piece of cake :e

Start afresh!

It's that special time of the year again. It's Vishu, the festival of lights and glory. The Kani-konna flowers has blossomed everywhere, and this time the small Konna tree in my house yard has also blossomed! :)

Crackers are making noise in the whole of the place. People will be having their Kani the coming midnight - a wonderful sight which symbolizes glory.. with all fruits, vegetables, cereals and the idol of lord krishna in the golden bowl.. and a reflection of the self in the small mirror, showing us the potential in ourselves, the power within us to change our fate.

This is time to kick start another fresh round, with all good deeds, promises, and a clean heart.
Let there be flowers!! :D

Konna flowers.. and et :)

So go ahead.. talk nice to everyone, hear some refreshing music, do something meaningful and good. And yeah.. watch some good movies; they can work wonders on your day :) . Speaking of which, I watched the movie Bridge to Terabithia. It is beautiful.. and it shows us there is no limit for our imagination. A must watch. Think beyond imagination!!

Have a prosperous time till the next Vishu.
Wish you all a Happy Vishu!! :)

Earth and Sun

Aww.. yesterday I got this mail from my little cousin Paurnami, who is about 10 years now. And I saw that she has made a picture so that I can make it my wallpaper. Well after seeing the image, I was really surprised to see her skill so that I couldn't help posting it here.. and making it my wallpaper :) ! Her impression of the universe, the space and perspective is amazing.

See the little art..

Earth and Sun by Paurnami

(You see some snow on the Earth? Is that Antarctica?)

And the little artist here..

Paurnami(Snap by me!)

I didn't mean to insist you upon using this as your wallpaper! But it's so beautiful to have an original wallpaper from a 10 year old :L . The image is probably made in MS paint and actually is a little smaller to be a wallpaper. Anyhow it looks perfect at my desktop :h !

Lets hope that she'll become a good artist and make more beautiful wallpapers for me ^_^ . And I also noticed that the smaller versions of this pic looks cool. See some of them..

How to add a unique set of Smileys/Emoticons in your Blogger blog

The ET smileys project kicked off when the Eternal Thinker blog wanted a custom set of emoticons in the blog posts.
After several requests from readers, I am sharing the free custom made smileys for Blogger with all of you! (These emoticons can also be used in Wordpress, Tumblr, or any other blog and website)

Now let your articles communicate more with these original cute smileys. The smiley set contains all the basic smileys plus a collection of interesting icons. You just need to type in the smiley symbol while writing the article, and they'll be converted to smiley images when it is published. Smileys will also display in the threaded comments in Blogger. ^_^

Main post content has been moved here

Note [28th May 2015]:
People who's been using et Smiley set already in their blog/website need to move to the newly hosted JavaScript files (check link above). As the earlier version is hosted in Google Code (which is scheduled to be shutdown soon), the smileys will stop working soon.

Smiley update!

It's time for all those little blog updates!

Here comes yet another cool update after the header update - the smiley update. It's nothing but a bunch of smileys to the et's blog :) You see that..? Now the blog posts will be spiced up with all these little smilies rather than the usual emoticons :D

Uff.. that wasn't an easy work :f ! Anyways the smileys comes in most of the usual flavours.. from the shy ones :$ to the devilish ones :v !! Moreover, they appears in comments as well! Enjoy the update :O

Unlike the header update the smiley update is more flexible. I'll be adding more smileys and the best thing is that.. I'll be sharing a bunch of smileys with you people. Just wait for another post on this, when I'll make some more smilies and tell you all how to make them appear in your posts. Also suggest me ideas on any cool smiley that comes in your mind, or those you would love to add in your posts :L . I'll try to include them to the group! :d

Thoughts On Template #2

Previously on TOT: Knowing your Blog Plan

Playing with the <div>

Last time in TOT we saw the basic structure of the Blogger blog. We discussed how the CSS and HTML parts work in union to build up the various blocks in the web page. This time we'll see how to create some cool effects by ourselves. These can be used to make your posts more readable and interesting!

So, the <div> tag is used to PLACE any predefined CSS class in the web page. But we really don't have to define the CSS class every time. We may utilize inline CSS(ie, CSS properties specified within the div tags) then. We will go through some examples which will give you some idea on how to work this out.

At times, we use statements in our posts which may fall under a certain category. Making it more clear.. our posts may contain quotes, certain codes, or we would just like to highlight some part of the post in a special manner. Instead of leaving them in the normal style or doing some simple formatting, we can use a CSS class which defines all formatting properties we need. This can include borders, background colours, and even background images.
See the following example:

Suppose I am including the following quote in my post:
"Think beyond imagination!"

Using CSS, I can make every quote appear like this:
Think beyond imagination
For doing this, first we have to define a CSS class with the required properties. The above example uses the following CSS code:

#quote
{
border:1px solid #D8D8D8;
margin:20px 20px 20px 20px;
padding:10px 10px 10px 40px;
background:#D0A9F5 url("link to image") left top no-repeat;
font-style:italic;
color:#FFFFFF;
}

Use Layout-->Edit HTML from the Blogger dashboard. To make sure you place the above CSS code in the CSS section itself, make it a habit to place them in a common position. You can paste it before the part which says #header-wrapper, or in between any two CSS blocks in the template code.

You can read in detail about the various CSS properties by Googling. It's not necessary that you know everything. You just have to refer whenever you need to know more about using any property.

Anyways some explanations are given below:

The colours:
Colours are specified as their hexadecimal values. #000000 means black and #FFFFFF means white. Everything else comes between these two extremes. You can get an online reference of HTML colour codes here.

Margin and padding:
Both of these sounds somewhat similar, but they are different, anyhow!. When CSS defines a block, margin specifies the distance between the block and it's neibouring ones. Padding specifies the distance from the border of the block and the contents of the block. See the following picture:

Background:
In the above CSS code, you'll see that a background colour and a url of the background image is specified. When no-repeat is not specified, the image repeats itself over the whole block. Somewhat like this:
Think beyond imagination
That's quite a mess. But it looks perfect when you choose the right image!
You can use repeat-x or repeat-y instead of no-repeat(without the left top specification) for repeating the image only horizontally or only vertically:

repeat-x
Think beyond imagination

repeat-y
Think beyond imagination
Hmm.. you can use these in a more creative way as the need comes!

Now, things aren't done yet! We need to apply the CSS properties we defined to the required text, don't we?
First type in whatever you need as usual.
Think Beyond Imagination

Then, switch to the Edit HTML mode in the post creator page:

Here, just add the div tags around the text.

<div id="quote">Think Beyond Imagination</div>

Publish the post, and we're done!!

We can go on define simialr CSS definitions for codes and other highlights. As you can see the code parts above are inside special yellowish boxes. That's nothing but the very same method :).

In case of minor or temporary highlights, you don't have to go for defining a whole CSS code. Here we use inline CSS. See how I used inline css below:

<div style="border:1px dotted black; background:#F2F5A9; padding:20px;">The Eternal Thinker</div>

The result is as follows:
The Eternal Thinker

Further research...
So now you can understand the CSS classes and the way the div tags are used. In addition to making your own code, you can also edit the existing code segments by changing the various CSS properties. Take your time and understand the code, and then start editing! But be cautious.. be on the safe side as mentioned in TOT#1.

So that's all clear I guess!
Enough for now? Yeah.. more than enough :D

Bye for now, stay tuned with TOT!

How I hacked into Ubuntu admin account with my limited account?!

So so.. this is something techy, something about Ubuntu, and something about having fun! You people must have heard a lot about hacking into the Windows XP/Vista administrator accounts when you're given only a limited account. Many of 'em doesn't work at all, as for a fact. Well we'll talk about something more interesting.. hacking into Ubuntu when you're given a limited account!

Where there is a will, there is a way. In our college department computer lab, we're all given those stupid limited accounts - in both Windows and Ubuntu. And that is crap. We can't install compiz fusion in Ubuntu, while in Windows we can't play those ol' games(Mortal Kombat, Roadrash..) during lab hours :( So I decided to take revenge, and went into this research about hacking into the walls. And it was a grand success! Let me tell you how..

1) First of all, let the system boot.. and wait for the GRUB menu to appear. You can see various options listed out. Now press 'e' to go to the edit menu(where you can add parameters to the boot process). In a smaller list that appears, select the appropriate option(Usually the 2nd one).

2) Now you get the boot script all open for editing. Delete off the part saying quiet splash(this is optional), and most important, add this part at the end :

init=/bin/bash

Press enter. Then press 'b' to boot the edited option.

3) After booting up, Ubuntu shows up just a fullscreen terminal showing root@none
Yeah! you've got a root terminal which doesn't need a password!
The following steps are even easier..

Mount the root partition

mount -o remount,rw /

You may need to type this after that: (this is optional, but it's better you do this)

mount -o remount,rw /proc

Then we reset the root password for the system

passwd
Enter new password
Confirm new password

When you do things right, you get a message that password has been updated successfully.
Type this in finally, just to make sure everything is fine and good.

sync

Go on.. restart the computer!

4) Let Ubuntu boot. Login to your limited account as if nothing happened.
Open the terminal and type in:

su
type in the password you created sometime before

5) Okey! now you are the root. When you're root and you know the correct commands, you can do anything in Ubuntu!
As for now, we'll simply add our limited account to the admin group
For me, the limited account given is student. To give admin privileges to this account, I just added it to the following groups.

adduser student admin
adduser student sudo
adduser student root

Adding to the admin group is enough. But just to ensure freedom.. :)

Liked the post ? Let us know ^_^

I'm done, and I installed some softwares and customized my own Ubutnu machine :D
That was simple, wasn't it. Now, whenever you get an Ubuntu machine do try this. Hack into your friends computer!

And for people who haven't tried Ubuntu yet.. go on try it once, you'll love it!
Check the Ubuntu site :)

And here's a post on the random entertainments that came up in the last few days..!!

47 - The Silent Assassin is back!
So.. I started playing Hitman 4 Blood Money! It's amazing. The role of the professional killer- agent 47- is more enjoyable than ever before. There's a lot of features - from various new moves for the character to well built environments to an interesting ingame story! Go to the Hitman Blood Money official website, fall in love with No. 47!

And watch this trailer of the game. Killing has never been this much fun before!

Tweets from college
One word - I was selected the Association Secretary of the Computer Science Department of my college. There's no big deal though. It's more idle than being an average student in OUR college!"Why me?!", I exclaimed while replying the Union secretary's phone call that evening.
"Just that everyone suggested you. You're selected."
You don't know, I hate politics in MY college. Every administrative task is under the control of this political union. Now what. I was taken to a room filled with Che guevara snaps the next day. I gave my nomination. And there's probably no one else for competition. Hence I'm practically in charge from now on. Let's see et revolutionizing the stagnant computer science department of gcek.. (NEVER!)

I just love to make paper-planes at college :)

Watchmen movie is released! Ha! I'm talking like a person who knows everything about Watchmen. Thanks to Twitter and again, the Twitterfox plugin. Some tweets can be real informative. One fine day people were all tweeting about this Watchmen movie, and eventually I came to know that it's the movie version of a super duper comic series. Then someone said "People who watch Watchmen movie without reading the comic should be burned alive!". Ooh.. so I decided to read the comic.

I downloaded all the 12 issues and then found that it's some strange .CBZ format. A small research showed that it's a format specific for graphic novels, and I found this Ubuntu software to read them conveniently. It's called comix.
To install comix in Ubuntu, simply use this terminal command..

sudo apt-get install comix

Hmm and the comic is interesting. I see a potential chance that I may go more into graphic novels.
And there are lot more comic actions coming to the screen.. including Spiderman 4 and the Avengers!

Next Friday is not your lucky day.
As a matter of fact, you have no lucky day this year!
